The average COLA increase isn't anything to get too excited about, but some people will get a lot more in 2025.

Nearly 68 million Social Security beneficiaries will see a 2.5 percent cost-of-living adjustment beginning in January 2025.  Increased payments to nearly 7.5 million people receiving SSI will begin on Dec. 31, 2024. ( Note: Some people receive both Social Security benefits and SSI).

Each year, Social Security benefits are eligible for a cost-of-living adjustment, or COLA. COLAs are supposed to help recipients keep up with inflation so they don't fall behind as living costs rise naturally over time.
