Rat birth control was an option discussed this week by a Baltimore City Council committee gathered to focus on rate abatement efforts.

The rats of New York will have a new problem to worry about now that the city council approved the use of ContraPest, a "type of rodent birth control," according to The Guardian. The contraceptive will be hidden in containers that entice rats to eat it.

The contraceptive pilot zone includes the Upper Manhattan district of Councilmember Shaun Abreu, who chairs the sanitation committee and sponsored the bill. The city’s newest trash containers for residential waste will also be rolled out in some of the same areas where the contraceptive pilot will be implemented.

This summer, Mayor Adams announced a 20 percent drop in calls from New Yorkers to the city about rat problems. But the latest salvo in this battle is birth control. New York city council signed off on a pilot program last Thursday that would distribute contraceptive pellets called ContraPest in special containers in the hopes of sterilizing the rodents.
