Italian world number one Jannik Sinner eased past Daniil Medvedev 6-3 6-4 in their final group match on Thursday, leaving Taylor Fritz to seal a place in the semi-finals of the season-ending ATP Finals after the American defeated Alex de Minaur 5-7 6-4 6-3.

Daniil Medvedev addressed doubters who said his career was "finished" after getting his first win of the week at the ATP Finals. The Russian had a self-confessed "tantrum" in his opening round-robin match against Taylor Fritz, receiving a point penalty and threatening to retire. But he turned things around to beat Alex de Minaur on Tuesday.

Djokovic won the 2023 ATP Tour Finals in Turin, beating Sinner 6-3, 6-3 in the final to avenge a round-robin defeat to the Italian. The victory crowned a superb season for Djokovic, who won three of the four Grand Slams alongside the Tour Finals. This year, he misses the event without an ATP Tour title to his name.

On September 30, 2024, Medvedev won his most recent match, 6-2, 6-4, over Flavio Cobolli in the quarterfinals of the China Open. During the past two years, Sinner is 6-3 against Medvedev in their head-to-head matchups. Their last one happened at the US Open on September 4, 2024 and was won by Sinner 6-2, 1-6, 6-1, 6-4.
