While quicker than the standard Ariya, the Nismo edition is still some way behind its most obvious high-performance EV crossover rivals. The Tesla Model Y Performance hits 62 mph in just 3.5 seconds, for example, and the Hyundai Ioniq 5 N is a tenth of a second quicker than that.

The new Nissan Ariya Nismo will be available to pre-order from 17 October, with prices for the hot electric SUV starting from £56,620 – £1,780 more than the previous range-topping model, but £3,370 less than one key rival, the Tesla Model Y Performance.

Nissan is the latest carmaker to join Tesla’s network of charging stations. The company announced that Nissan Ariya drivers can use the MyNissan app to find charging stations with plans to make the North American Charging Standard (NACS) adapter available to Ariya drivers.
